The Little Acorn Cafe

The Little Acorn Café is situated at 137 High Street Terang (The Princes Highway) in the former Maternal and Child Health Centre, next door to the library and playground. Cooinda have also established a commercial kitchen to supply the café with healthy locally produced food at our Dow Street Day Program site. The café is a wonderful opportunity for staff to support participants in a great learning environment, to interact with the public and promote mainstream roles for people with a disability to our community. Two staff are rostered to the café each day, along with a half time chef.  Alongside them participants are involved as a part of their Day Program activities, in all elements of hospitality, customer service, food handling and preparation.  All participants undertake their food handling certificates. Since opening in December 2016, we have seen great outcomes for participants; each has taken great pride in their work, their presentation and their valued role and each has learned new skills along the way. The emphasis of the café is on great coffee and quality food: you will not find a deep fryer or grill in the café!  Healthy meals, fresh salads and smoothies, great cakes and slices, and the best coffee for miles around.  We also use and sell some local produce from the region. Cooinda have had generous support from the Terang Op-Shop, Terang Co-Op, Western District Employment Access, and Corangamite Shire in establishing this program. OUR MODEL OF SUPPORT

Our Villas cater to a range of people of different age, gender and needs. Each Villa is managed by a Team Leader and with Residential Support Workers they provide quality care and support to each individual resident. Many residents attend the Cooinda Day Program through the day or access community programs or activities. Villa staff work closely with families, friends and carers as well to maintaining communication, connection and relationships with the community. Villa staff also assist residents to meet their health and wellbeing needs with support to access health services or appointments, administer and monitor medication and liaise with families and professionals. Residents participate fully in the day to day household operations. They meet regularly to plan everything from menus and shopping to household tasks and activities.

OUR MODEL OF SUPPORT

The Cooinda Respite program is an invaluable resource to families and carers that provides a safe, secure and homely environment for participants. Staying at Respite can be for one day or many; speak to the Team Leader about availability, cost and funding. Our staff foster a relaxing but stimulating environment for guests to participate in the daily tasks of the home and support individuals in their hygiene or health needs as well as providing activity and community access in the region. Respite promotes skill development and supports guests to learn and achieve during their stay. Cooinda participants at Respite can continue to attend programs through the day or evening. Cooinda Respite is not only for Cooinda participants; we welcome eligible people from across our region or across the state. Respite has sleep over staff and full staffing through the day whilst guests are home.
